2018 in Books

We’ve reached 2019. Huzzah! Before we look forward, let’s look back. I started 2018 with a few reading goals. Let’s see how they went:

-Challenge myself to read outside my comfort zone with a horror novel: Nope. I completely forgot about this one.

-I’d also like to read more poetry, non-fiction, and young adult: Non-fiction had the biggest bump with seventeen read in 2018, which is about three times as many as 2017.  I read twelve young adult books this year, which is two more than 2017. Poetry didn’t change much at all. I read two last year, and one this year.

According to Goodreads tracking: I read 35,168 pages across 143 books. The average length of the books I read was 245 pages, and my average rating was 3.3 out of 5. I didn’t meet my goal of reading 150 books, but I’m all right with that.

The longest book I read was Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas at 672 pages. The shortest was a short story in Sherry Thomas’s Lady Sherlock series: Charlotte Holmes and the Locked Box at six pages.

Five Most Read Genres of 2018

  1. Romance (54)

  2. Comics (31)

  3. Picture books (25)

  4. Non-fiction (17)

  5. Young Adult (12)

The biggest change this year is that I read more Non-fiction than Young Adult books. Romance wins with the most read with forty-five adult romances, and nine YA romances read.

Top Romance Sub-Genres

  1. Historical-Regency (26)

  2. Contemporary (20)

  3. Fantasy (7)

  4. Thriller (1)

There was a shift within my most read romances this year. In 2017, I read forty-six Historical Romances and only eleven Contemporary. This past year the numbers have been more balanced.

The books that I’d recommend:

For 2019 I have challenged myself to read 75 books. While I love reading, I’m reducing my goal so I take more time to write this year. I’d like to find a good balance between reading and writing.
